What is Flight Data Monitoring?
There are many terms describing the action of Flight Data Monitoring, (more commonly known as FDM), such as Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA), and Flight Data Analysis (FDA). It is the pro-active use of digital flight data from routine operations to improve aviation safety and is part of the operator’s Safety Management System (SMS). The data is downloaded from either a Flight Data Recorder (FDR) or more commonly a Quick Access Recorder (QAR) on a regular basis.

Why do we need FDM?
FDM is a tool that helps to reduce the risk in operating aircraft. By not using this “best practice” tool there is a business risk in the event of an accident.
ICAO has stated that:
“Operators of large aircraft over 27 tons (59,500lbs) and recommended for aircraft over 20 tons (44,000 lbs) shall establish and maintain a flight data analysis program as part of its accident prevention and flight safety program.”
The program shall be non-punitive and contain adequate safeguards to protect the source of the data. Most National Aviation Authorities (NAAs) have legislated to bring FDM into force.

The system is also capable of support for plotting flight paths against terrain and airport diagrams, which is also available to staff through a remote connection to the FDM system.
The system is simple to use and supports automation of various regular and ad-hoc reports, in both graphical and textual form.
